As at the 2nd July 2018, the government remains steadfast in its intention to implement the new EU Directive on Package Travel despite the UK’s decision to leave the EU. However, the industry will not see a consultation on the matter  until “late autumn” (2018), leaving only a year to bring in new regulations and potentially causing headaches for businesses that will need to adjust, particularly to the new financial protection regime that is currently envisaged.

The new Directive was adopted in November 2017 and a consultation was originally expected by March 2018, in tandem with a consultation on ATOL reform. But the announcement of the EU referendum in February led to a delay, initially seeing consultations put back to June and September 2018 and the timetable has now been pushed back to October/November 2018.

Although the detail of the regulatory regime has yet to be decided, it isn’t too early to start considering your position under the new Package Travel Directive to avoid hasty decisions come 2019.
